Paranoia? How can I overcome it?

Two years ago I smashed my teeth on the ground shattering my front two teeth. I got two crowns put in and everything was fine. I then was playing in a soccer tournament when somehow I went down and someone's knee went into my face shattering my front two again. I got crowns yet again. Since that second incident, which occured one year ago, I haven't been able to do anything without picturing myself smashing my teeth while doing it. Whether it be walking down the street, going for a bike ride, you name it and I picture myself shattering my teeth. I even have dreams where I'll destroy my teeth sometimes too. This paranoia, well I assume it's paranoia, hasn't really effected my life too bad or stopped me from doing anything. I just can't get it out of my head. Anyone have advice how to get over this?

Paranoia? How can I overcome it?
This is not paranoia but more like an anxiety disorder or a phobia. To get past this you need to desensitize yourself to the fear. It is good that it has not stopped you from doing anything, but things like this can get worse and can interfere with your life.

To get it out of your head you need to talk about it. Perhaps with a professional counselor. The more you examine your thoughts and feelings regarding the fears the less importance they will have.

Example: You say you cannot do anything without picturing yourself smashing your teeth. So you need to work on envisioning yourself doing these things and NOT smashing your teeth.

You may need to think practically and think of ways you can walk down the street or ride a bike and reduce the chances of shattering your teeth. This will give you power and control which also helps to reduce fears.

Good luck.

Reply:i think youve been takin too many drugs....

lay off the cheese and heroine if so
Reply:wear a mouth guard, just kidding, just enjoy life to it's fullest and whatever happens happens, at least it's not something more serious, like your sight.
Reply:well its a realistic fear you have, which is founded because its based in reality, you did break your teeth, maybe if you feel it could help try to get refered to a councilor to talk things through, put it in perspective
Reply:to get it out of your head simply find something more interesting to think about, think about how to make more money. write a book, draw a picture, go sailing, fishing, jump out of an airplane with a parachute, and you will soon forget about your teeth.

you think about your teeth because you like doing it (subconsciously), so give your subconscious something better to think about

when i get "visions of me getting hurt" i handle then like visions, it doesn't mean its gonna happen, so i enjoy them like an action movie.

don't let fear dominate your mind.

simply be more careful next time, best way to loose fear, is to gain confidence, which you can gain by learning to fall, and defend yourself so that your head does not get hit in any way.

hope this helps
Reply:There should be a warning label stamped on our butt when we are born that says: Warning, being alive may be hazardous to your health.

Think, every time you have lost your 2 front teeth they have been replaced with caps. Caps are nice, I have a few also. In life we will have accidents but the lesson is to get back up, dust our self off and simply continue. You can be a player or part of the audience. Its up to you. neither one is wrong.
Reply:There are a few things you can do.

When you have these thoughts, picture a big stop sign in your head. Try to stop the irrational thought in its tracks. Realize you have been thinking about it and try to think of something else.

Once you are able to effectively stop the thoughts, try picturing yourself being successful at whatever it is you're doing. Picture yourself scoring goals or run plays in your head where you come out on top. Think of the way your muscles move or the way the wind feels on your skin when riding your bike.

If the thoughts become too overwhelming it might be best to talk to a professional. They have desensitization and relaxation techniques you can use when your fears get the best of you.

Good luck!
