What are signs of old age in a dog?

What are signs of old age on a dog?

I just got a Chihuahua Male from the Animal Shelter and they did not know the age...I don't have the money RIGHT NOW to take it to my vet and just wanted to know if anyone had a clue... Before adopting I did consider the expenses of taking it to the vet and I can afford it for anyone who is wondering. *********HERE'S A LINK TO HIS PICTURE TAKEN TODAY******* I added pictures of his teeth hope they are clear. http://fiu.facebook.com/album.php?aid=20...

What are signs of old age in a dog?
Cute dog it's hard to say his age . His teeth might indicate he is not a pup he has lots of tartar and that should be looked after , It's hard to imagine though a shelter not knowing the age of a dog they sell . Look for graying around the face , is he active ? does he sleep alot ? can he jump up easily ?

But really no matter how old he is won't you love him just the same ? Get him to a vet as soon as you can afford it to make sure he is healthy and has his proper shots and start giving him either milk bones or denta bone .. something that will help him with his teeth , other wise they will decay and could cause medical problems

have fun with your new dog he deserves a good friend
Reply:Can't see the teeth well, but you can see that they are very plaque covered... He looks like he is maybe 6+ years old maybe, and his teeth have been severely neglected.
Reply:If he or she is always sleeping, not active that is how you tell if it is old
Reply:a sign of a dog gettin older are its eyes grow dark and dark as the age increases...and behaviour changes.....sorry i donno more than these
Reply:There are some ways to tell if your dog is old-not just by his appearance but by his physical activity. If he is lazy and isn't too good around other dogs and children, they may be old. But since you have a Chihuahua, they are known to be temper-mental and timid at times. If your dog is like this, you may want to try to get him used to other dogs and children and walk him. well thats all I know for now, if I get any info I will let you know.
Reply:your chihuahua needs to see a vet right now. he may have a tooth infection which is very painful. if u cant afford a vet why didnt you think about it BEFORE torturing your already depressed/rejected dog!!?
Reply:i dont no my aunt has a chuwawa%26amp; that 1 looks just like it,only it's fatter,hehehe:-),its teeth look 2 yellow tho
Reply:cute dog!!! no one here can explain enough to tell you if hes older or not.

go to a vet and he will give you an estimate.

good luck!
Reply:his yellow teeth make me think he must be at least ten.
Reply:ooh1 hes soo cute but his teeth have ALOT of tartar. clean them NOW.
Reply:Hello, let me first start by saying that a chihuahua could live up to 16-18 yrs old. It is hard telling the age because they live for so long. I have a 5 yr old chihuahua and i am also a veterinarian technician... If i had to guess i would guess your little guy is 6-8 yrs old. He looks young and bad teeth are common in the breed and i dont think his teeth have anything to do with his age. You could probably try chipping some of the tartar off. Take your finger nail and chip away from the gums. If you chip towards the gum the tartar can get lodged and become infected. Or if you dont wanna do that you can buy some dental bones to chip some of it off. His gums look healthy and pink. They do not look infected like some people are saying but it is hard to tell in the pictures. His teeth definetly need some work though.

The best way to tell a chihuahuas age is by seeing how active he is. Normally older dogs are less active. Also chihuahuas are more proned for disorders as they age. Check for luxating petallas (knee problem), eye problems, stiff joints(more common in larger dogs) etc.. Also you could see if he sleeps a lot but it is common for all dogs to sleep a lot.

It is hard telling a dogs age over a few pictures but i would guess 6-8 yrs old. Best of luck to you and your dog.
Reply:if the shelter isa reputqable one they would includa vet checup with the dog to certify the dog is healthy and they can givea fairly acurate estimate on its age
Reply:Older dogs (seniors) typically grow gray hairs around their muzzle. It's easier to see on darker colored dogs, but if you look hard, you can also see gray hair on lighter colored dogs.

P.S. A vet can't just look at a dog and give you that dog's age. They can offer an educated guess, but that's all it would be ... a guess.
Reply:Well, I had a goldie and he lived to be 13. He was fine up until his last 6 months. He didn't move much, would have trouble getting up, started smelling bad, his hair got really white and matty, and his eyes glazed over. I never had a small breed so I don't know if they are the same. Either way, having an old dog isn't bad. Just be careful and give him the best years of his life.
Reply:he is most likely 5 yrs old. His tears on his eyes and the whiteness of his face,,,,,maybe hes bout 4-6.
Reply:Not really active... Usually they eat a lot and then go back to sleep or they never even eat.. And i your dog is toilet train(on the newspaper), it might have forgotten where is it..
