Why are SOME dentists crooks?

We started painting our living room this afternoon;; so my mom was taking the pictures down and taking them out of frames so we could store them for a little while without the frames getting busted. Well, I was looking at this really cute picture of me when I was about 2-3 and one of my teeth looked blue-ish gray!! I asked my mom and she said that this dentist said that my tooth couldnt be repaired and he had to put a cap on it. Then she said we went to another dentist and he said it could have been repaired with a filling (it wasnt really a cavity though;; just kind of a pit in the tooth)!!!! My question is why would a dentist do this to a poor child only age 2? I know all dentists arent like him because I have a really really nice dentist right now that is awesome, funny, and one of the nicest guys I have ever met!!! Why are some dentists like this though? Are they in it for the money?

Why are SOME dentists crooks?
There are some bad apples in every profession.
Reply:Here in the States all Dentist and Doctors are in it for the money. They are all scum of the earth.
Reply:A person doesn't go into a professional university course in order to become a thief. He could do this without spending all the time effort and tens of thousands of dollars and headaches and heartaches of getting his qualifications. So I believe that your accusatory tone should definitely be modified.Another dentist.
Reply:To put a white filling on a tooth, the area has to be dry and free of saliva. Most toddlers would not be patient enough to sit through this procedure (let alone a needle), possible crying and drooling and making things difficult. Since this is a tooth that will fall out in a few years anyway, it is easier on the dentist, the child and the parents to put a cap on it with a little cement. It protects the tooth and is over quickly with not a bad experience. =)
Reply:You haven't said enough in your question for anyone to determine if the care you received as a child was below the standard of care. If it was a primary tooth, it could be that the dentist was trying to save your family some money by using amalgam material, since the tooth was a primary.

I'm curious as to why so many people jump to the conclusion that dentists are "crooks" and "just in it for the money."

It takes at least 8 years to get a degree in dentistry - it's a difficult course and not everyone makes it, cost is tens of thousands of dollars. After graduation, besides paying back student loans, a new dentist has to either practice as an associate or take on a huge debt to establish a new practice.

With all the time and expense involved, there are PLENTY of other, easier ways to get people's money. Plumbing, auto mechanics, home contractors...or people who sell on-line "dental discount plans".

You are hearing a story told by your mother about a dentist who treated you years ago. Without the facts, why would you assume the person who treated you did not do the best they could?
Reply:IT'S UNFAIR, AND JUDGMENTAL TO SAY, "WHY ARE SOME DENTISTS CROOKS?" DENTISTRY IS A NOBLE AND HARD TO OBTAIN PROFESSION. ONE DENTIST WILL NOT ALWAYS HAVE A SIMILAR TREATMENT FOR A DENTAL PROBLEM AS ANOTHER DENTIST. IN OTHER WORDS, DIFFERENT DENTISTS MAY CHOOSE DIFFERENT WAYS TO TREAD THE SAME PROBLEM.
Reply:I'm not sure I understand the question. who is the crook here because if the first dentist was then he would have put the filling in to get the money rather then have nothing done and get no money. or is it the other dentist who said your tooth could have been fixed when actually, a filling may not have done anything for it. it could have been a problem in the tooth itself and in that case, a filling would not fix it and if you were 2-3 that tooth is going to fall out so no sense doing something that will cost money that isnt necessary. they arent in it for the money, but rather to take care of your teeth. your oral health has a major impact on your overall healt like you couldnt even imagine. I'm in school for dental hygiene and I can assure you I'm not doing it for the money I'll make when I'm done, but rather to help others help themselves.
